About Learn Doglish
Welcome and thank you for visiting Learn Doglish
My name is Roy and I am the owner of Learn Doglish. I live in Plumstead South East London, with my wife and our two German Shepherd dogs, Raven and Lexi.
I promote my dog training through Synergy, the concept that two units working together (you and your dog) will achieve a higher better level of success, better than one could hope to achieve on their own.
I am very passionate about pet dogs being trained and hold the dogs welfare at the forefront of all my training. The Dangerous Dogs Act (DDA) is very clear about pet dogs’ behaviour, not just outside but also in the dog’s own home and garden (see our legal page for more information).
I have been training our numerous family pet dogs, along with other people’s dogs for the past 25 years. When you train a dog, you see just how training helps to fulfil that dog’s life too.
My interest in training dogs goes right back to when I was a small boy, around 12 years old, and my Father bought me my first puppy; a fox terrier cross called Patch. I vividly remember hopelessly trying to get the puppy to sit, when all he wanted to do was jump all over me. This was the early 70s and unfortunately the training knowledge was just not openly available as it is today. Since then I’ve felt very strongly about the benefits of training and have worked hard to ensure my future pet dogs had the benefits of good training.
For many years I have studied canine behaviour along with puppy and dog training and have obtained distinction levels in each class. I have also taken an Instructor’s course with The National Dog Training Academy where I continue to develop my growth in dog training. I am currently studying Canine Nutrition and the effects this can have on a dogs behaviour. I believe in a holistic approach to my dog training.
All our training is scientifically proven, positive reinforcement, reward-based training which teaches the dog to make the correct choices that we prefer them to make.
When training any dog or puppy, I always remember Edward Thorndike’s (The Law of Effect) which in essence states that, if a dog’s behaviour is reinforced with a reward then the dog is likely to repeat the behaviour again.
